About

My name is Carla and I’ve been gluten-free for many years…back before it was as recognized as it is today. I’m not celiac, but I definitely have an intolerance to wheat, oats, and barley. I haven’t noticed a problem with a few gluten-containing foods, such as rye and spelt, so I do indulge with these ingredients occasionally. I try to keep coffee, dairy, and sugar to a minimum without totally denying myself those little indulgences we all crave on occasion. I do the best I can and keep everything in moderation so I can still enjoy all the foods I love.

I live in Portland, Oregon metro area. It’s a gluten-free paradise here. Restaurants, coffee shops, grocery stores…so many of them here offer gluten-free options. Eating out can be particularly difficult for people with gluten intolerances or any kind of food allergies for that matter, so I’m always on the lookout for good places to go with healthy food choices. Portland is known for both great beer and great coffee. Thankfully, I can partake in one of these at least.

I keep active with yoga, running, strength training, and swimming. I love to cook, I love to eat, and I love my coffee. And I love riding my bike, whether its mountain biking, road cycling, commuting, or cyclocross. Bicycles are also a major part of what makes Portland the special place it is.

This blog is mostly about being gluten-free: recipes to make at home and places to go in Portland, OR and the Portland metro area. And a bit about other things I love: naturally gluten-free recipes, dairy-free and vegan recipes, coffee, food, local cycling, exercise,  and overall health.
